오픽이 어려워졌다고?

최근 오픽 시험이 더 어려워지고 있다고 한다. 

특히 Role-play 문제가 어려워지고 있는데 왜 그런 것일까?! 단언하지는 못하지만 많은 학생들이 시험에 응해서 문제 패턴들이 읽히고 이를 잘 연습해서 대답하기 때문에 학생들 성적이 좋아진 것 같다.

그래서 자연스럽게 오픽에서 문제의 패턴을 바꾸어 가는 것으로 추정된다.

 

Role-play가 어떻게 어려워지고 있을까?!

예전 : 물건의 구매, 구매시 발생한 문제점의 해결, 친구와 약속 취소, 도움 요청 등 (구체적 상황 제시)

변화 : 상황에 대한 자유 질문 (상황 제시, 자유질문)

Now, I'm going to give you a situation and ask you to act it out. Let's say you would like to buy tickets for a sports event for you and your friend. Please ask the person at the ticket booth three or four questions about things.  You would like to know about the upcoming sports event.	Your friend just took his first dance lesson. You are also considering taking it as well. Ask your friend 3 or 4 questions about his first class to see if you should sing up with him.
I'm sorry. There's a problem you need to resolve. You've just learned that you will have to work on the day of the big party. Call your relative and leave a message explaining the problem. Then offer two or three suggestions on how you might still be able to help with the preparations, even though you won't be able to go.	Let's pretend that you are looking for a place to study at school. Please call you friend and ask 3-4 questions about where you can study on campus.
I'd like to give you a situation and ask you to act it out. Imagine that the mother of one of your son's friends calls to invite your son to a movie. Ask the mother three or four questions to find out more about her plans.	You borrowed your freinds gaming console, but it broke while you were using it. Please call your friend to explain the situation and offer 2-3 solutions.

여려워진 RP 11 : 3 Question with 5 Step Strategy

5 Step에 맞춰 3가지 질문을 하는 전략인데, 아래와 같이 질문하는 것을 연습해보자.

 

(첫 번째 질문)

step1 : 대충 내용 설명

step2 : 첫 번째 질문하기

step3 : 상대방 말을 보여줘라

step4 : 레알? / 진짜?

step5 : "나"를 포함시키기

(두 번째 질문)

step2 : 두 번째 질문하기

step3 : 상대방 망릉 보여줘라

step4 : 레알? / 진짜?

step5 : "나"를 포함시키기

(세 번째 질문)

위 전략에 맞추어 대답한 사례이다.

어려워졌다고 고민하지 말고,

So, I heard about, uh.. the OPIc test got a little more diffcult now? Right?

Yeah, that's true, actually. Yeah.

Like, in what sense? How did it get more difficult?

Now, this is just in theory. Um, I'm not a 100% sure.

But I feel that it's getting more difficult because a lot of the students now are getting the marks.

The high mark...

Because of OPICNOJAM!

I mean, I'm not implying anything!

The reality is that the test is getting harder.

So, why are they marking it harder?

It must be because of the results.

It makes sense though. Even for education.

Like, every year, they do get a little bit more tough, right? So..

If a lot more students get the higher marks, then they have no choice but to make it a little harder or else everyone's gonna get the best marks.

So, how do you think they should study.. like... differently? Or... to prepare for their next OPIc test?

 

That's good question.

So, basically, there's a role-play section where you have to pretend you're someone else.

So, they'll actually give you a situation and then you have to literally imagine that you are that person

in that situation... and you have to kind of act it out.

So, there's something called RP11.

That's the first role-play question.

And it used to be mostly about money, or purchasing, or whatever...

OK, like a retail environment kind of thing, right? Yeah, yeah..

So they're buying a phone, they're buyin some clothing..Computer.. whatever..

And basically, they just have to interact with the other person and buy something.

So, I had a certain strategy for that.

So, if money is involved, use my strategy... you're good!

 

But um, now days, they're changing it up.

It's not just about money. It's about, like.. situation.

So it's kind of like a real life... very random scenario.

So, because of that, you konw, they cannot use my money strategy.

So, it's more freestyle.

 

How long is the... like... the OPIc test?

The test itself is 40 minutes.

Wow, it's 40 minutes?!

Wow, that's pretty long. That's longer than I thought it would be.

It's pure conversation_40 minutes type of Q&A.

Exactly, and it's 15 questions.

So, you have to literally time yourself.

Because, they're not gonna sya like,

"Ok, each question is this amount of time."

So, you have to pace yourself.

It's like 2... 3 minutes on average.

Kind of yeah..

But I tell my students, you know what... a minute.. a minute thirty is prefect.

Some students finished like under 20 minutes.

And they'll still get the best marks.

So there's no like set time or anything.

A lot of students.. they have a misunderstanding of..

OK, the longer the answer, the better.

Long is not quality.

That's sure. Quality over length.

And if you make it longer, there's more chance for mistake, too.

That's exactly what I say! You know what I mean!

And it's true, so... you know what?

If you're not that confident in explaining something?

Keep it simple. Keep it clear.

KISS/ Keep It Simple, Stupid.

You know, they took the test, they tell me what the questions are.

And then, if I see that, oh, now it's kind of different...

So now, I'll share stragegies based on that.

So you have a lot of database.

That's pretty good.

But, for me, it's not really about... ok, let's make a script and memorize.

It's about the stragety.

How do you freestyle?

How do you do these things?

Yes, it is getting harder but we don't have to worry too much.

Cos now, this is our opportunity to actually increase our English skill..
